Baledirtag Formation

Baledirtag Fm

Period:
Permian

Age Interval:
P2 (25), Kungurian Stage (late-Cisuralian Epoch; late-Early Permian)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the Baleri’rtag area, Aheqi County, Xinjiang. It was named by the No. 2 Geological Survey Expedition under the Xinjiang Geological Bureau in 1964, and was cited officially by Wu Shaozu and Zhang Zhimin (1985).

Synonym: Baleri’rtag Fm

Lithology and Thickness

Clastics. In the Baleri’rtag area, the Lower part of the formation is composed of grey-black shale, intercalated with calcareous sandstone, conglomerate and thin-bedded limestone; which is coeval with the Xiaotikanlik Fm volcanics in same region. Upper part is composed of calcareous sandstone, intercalated with shale; which is coeval with the Kulgan Fm in the same area. Thickness is 963 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy claystone

Fossils

Brachiopods are represented by Schellwienella sp., Dictyoclostus sp., and Marginifera sp.

Fusulinida are represented by Eopolydiexodina cf. shumardi (but not verified), Parafusulina sp. and Minojapanella sp. being found on the eastern slope of the Taskenliketao area; and Parafusulina japanella, P. constricta and Biwaella sp. being found to the south of the Kaidu River.

Owing to the fact that the Eopolydiexodina has not been found once again so far, there are still doubts if there really exists this particular Fusulinida fauna.

Age

In accordance with the Fusulinida reported to the south of the Kaidu River, Zhang Zhimin and Wu Shaozu (1991) thought this formation should belong to the Qixia’an Subseries; but the Fusulinida found in the Taskenliketao area may probably belong to the Maokou’an Subepoch = Guadalupian Epoch (Middle Permian). The Baledirtag Fm, and the Xiaotikanlik Fm plus Kulgan Fm, represent synchronous deposits but of different facies. Considering the highest stratigraphic horizon of the surrounding marine strata, the age of the formation should be no later than the Qixia’an Subepoch = Kungurian Stage (late-Cisuralian Epoch; late-Early Permian).
